Mood Swings in Menopausal Stage

Mood swings are one of the common symptoms experienced by women who are in their menopausal stage. Menopause is the term used to refer to the entire period from peri-menopausal stage to the stage of post-menopause. This refers to the last period of a woman wherein various hormonal changes in the body affects her physiological, psychological and emotional status.

A woman needs to adapt to the many changes in her body. These make this stage a big adjustment she needs to face. Though the hormonal levels may balance out and the mood changes may disappear, it is a hard situation to be in to.

What are mood swings?

These are defined as abrupt changes in mood. It is when a woman experiences drastic and extreme changes in their temperament. This is a difficult situation for an individual who could end up having troubles with relationships and even with herself. Some women experience being happy for a moment and suddenly becomes irritable and angry. If this happens, it is good to remember that it will pass away.

What could possibly cause mood swings?

The exact cause for the mood changes in menopause is unknown yet certain studies try to explain this phenomenon.

The body has fluctuating levels of hormones such as progesterone, estrogen and androgen. This could be a link to having changes in mood. According to the studies done at the Stony Brook and the Yale University, the hormone estrogen has a great effect on the serotonin production in the brain. This neurotransmitter (serotonin) is responsible for regulating mood.

Changes in hormonal levels in the body may cause physical changes on a woman. It is something she needs to adapt with and accept. However, it is not an easy thing to do and some end up worrying and getting depressed.

Ways to Manage Mood Swings

Exercise. Exercise at least 20 minutes a day. This helps in promoting circulation, enhances sleep and relaxes the body.

Diet. Small frequent meals that are healthy supply the body with energy that helps in coping with the emotional changes.

Relaxation techniques. Natural remedies like aroma therapy, herbal or homeopathic therapy, massage and meditation may be helpful to relax and in dealing with stress.

Nutrition. Mood swings may be related to the depleted levels of Vitamins B6 and B12, Folate and Vitamin D. Taking supplements with these vitamins may help in the condition.
